Q. What is Database Normalization? Explain the different normal forms and their significance. Additionally, describe ACID properties in DBMS.
Ans. Database Normalization is the process of organizing the fields and tables of a relational database to minimize redundancy and dependency. The most common normal forms are: 1. First Normal Form (1NF): Ensures that the table has no repeating groups and each column contains atomic values.
Example:
2. Second Normal Form (2NF): Achieved when it is in 1NF and all non-key attributes are fully functional dependent on the primary key.
3. Third Normal Form (3NF): Achieved when it is in 2NF and all the attributes are functionally dependent only on the primary key.
Example of 3NF:
ACID properties ensure reliable processing of database transactions: 1. Atomicity: Ensures that all operations within a transaction are completed; if not, the transaction is aborted. 2. Consistency: Ensures that a transaction can only bring the database from one valid state to another. 3. Isolation: Ensures that concurrently executing transactions do not affect each other. 4. Durability: Ensures that once a transaction has been committed, it remains so, even in the event of a system failure.
