About the Role

American Express is hiring Apprentices for its Second Line of Defense (2LOD) – Complaints Analytics Team within the Global Risk & Compliance Business Unit.

This is an opportunity to work on real business problems using enterprise-scale data, with insights and recommendations that are presented to Senior Leadership, the Board, and regulatory stakeholders. You'll gain hands-on experience in analytics, risk management, compliance, NLP, GenAI, and automation while working in a highly regulated financial services environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

Complaint Analytics & Business Insights

  • Analyze customer complaint trends and related datasets such as Cards in Force (CIF), call volumes, chat volumes, and product-level metrics.
  • Identify patterns, anomalies, and emerging risks.
  • Generate structured insights and contribute to monthly deep-dive "Spotlight" analyses.
  • Support presentations shared with senior leadership teams.

Risk Detection & AI Projects

  • Work on projects focused on identifying potential UDAAP (Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices) risks from customer complaints.
  • Analyze unstructured text data including customer complaints and resolution notes.
  • Explore NLP, text analytics, GenAI, Enterprise ChatGPT, and automation-based solutions.
  • Experiment with new approaches to improve risk identification and monitoring.

Data Quality & Governance

  • Support quality checks on recurring reporting processes.
  • Validate data, reconcile outputs, and identify inconsistencies.
  • Learn how reporting controls, governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements are applied in real-world environments.
  • Assist in maintaining audit-ready reporting standards.

Automation & Reporting

  • Support development of reporting logic and data pipelines.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve efficiency.
  • Assist in building scalable analytical solutions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with teams across Compliance, Risk, Analytics, and Business Units.
  • Learn how data-driven insights support enterprise-wide decision-making.

Eligibility Criteria

Required Skills

  • Strong proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of Python or SQL.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • High attention to detail and ownership mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working with unstructured text data.
  • Basic understanding of NLP or text analytics techniques.
  • Familiarity with Tableau or Power BI.
  • Interest in Analytics, Risk, Compliance, AI, or Data Science.
